I've been listening to this podcast called Secular Buddhism and the host keeps going back to the concept of impermanence so I've been thinking about impermanence a lot.

These kids keep growing even when you deliberately ask them to stop growing and stay just as they are.

I would take Eliza's tantrums eternally if it meant that I could always have her rainbow happiness.

But alas impermanence reigns supreme and suffering happens when we want things to be permanent

For example when your heart is set on your four year old daughter and her best-friend growing up together until they are old enough to fall in love and live happily ever after but then the parents decide to lave for Utah-land. Eliza is in for a real heartbreak.

I've been trying to coach her and get her prepared for this change. For example we set up this club where every month we head to Matsumoto's (yes there is always a line and yes it's worth the wait, just as long as you ask for sweetened condensed milk on top of your shave ice) and we get shave ice, but the rule is that we can't get the same flavors we got the previous time. It's a fun way to try something new.

Eliza breaks all the rules and won't try new flavors. Since she is my boss I always let her get rainbow because anything else just makes her sad

Also, it's good to have some things be constant right? May she always have rainbow shave ice in her life and may it always bring her joy and happiness. That's my wish for my daughter, rainbow shave ice when life gets hard.

Two and a half years ago and some change I gave up blogging. I was so busy trying to fit it all in that a lot of things had to give and the blog was part of that process of sacrificing my sanity for optimizing my time so that I could be a highly productive employee and parent. I worked every day from 6:00am-2:00pm then dashed out the door to pick up my daughter at 2:05pm and help with carpool. I would get home every day around 3:00 and was doing kids and house work until 9:00pm. And yes, there were beach trips and there was fun but it was all while wearing my mom hat. After the kids were in bed I would often jump back online and work until midnight. I lived for the weekends, when Chris and I would go on a date, when we could have friends over for dinner, when I could sleep for more than 6 hours at a time. I did this crazy dance for a year and a half and then was forced to make a change.

I now work less hours for a much more family friendly (honestly, let's just call it life friendly) company and have started an amazing new journey of self-care. I sleep more. I eat better. I exercise. I wash my face in the morning. I go out on weekdays. This has been a hard process with some serious growing pains. I have had some serious paradigms shift that have resulted in mostly me expecting different things out of myself and being able to see my kids and my relationship with them in a whole new light.

I don't know what this blog will look like here on out and I am ok with that. For so long I tried to focus on how I would blog as a business. What angle do I want to have? What is my value prop? How can I monetize? I started two other blogs during this time and gave up on it pretty fast.

For now I'm ok with it being what it used to be, my happy place, no strings attached. I'm not going to do an editorial calendar. I'm not going to plan out my recipes months in advance. I'm not going to have a business angle to it. I already do that successfully for my day job, I don't need my blog to be that (not right now). It might go in a more professional blogging direction, we'll see. For now I'm just happy to be back in this space.

It's been one week since I've started waking up in Hawaii.

And it feels good.

It feels right.

Moving to Hawaii was a long process. From last year when Christian applied for the job to waiting, negotiating with my job, packing, crossing off things in our endless to-do list, topped with flight drama. We prayed a lot during the whole process. I begged Heavenly father to help Christian get the job and then I begged him to help me keep my job. Even when those two things were set and I knew we were moving, emotionally it was still hard to let go.

Change is hard for me, it requires me to relinquish control, to live in a messy house full of boxes of things we own and use regularly and things we don't use regularly. It makes me feel very vulnerable. It makes me feel like a hoarder. It takes up a lot of my time and energy. It's way more comfortable to just stay put.

But as I watched my stuff being packed into the crate, our furniture being taken apart, our home that we earnestly put together and decorated and made it our own, being disassembled, I felt happy. It was not a feeling I was expecting at all. South San Francisco never felt like our community. It was a fine place for the eight months we lived there but it was never really where we were going to put down roots.

Leaving my office and saying bye to my co-workers was hard. I'm a social creature, I like working with people, and I like my co-workers a lot. Luckily I work an online job so I still feel connected to people at work. It's not the same of course, but it's a worthwhile trade. Now I work from 6:00am-2:00pm Hawaii time. Yesterday, for example, I picked up Enzo from school then took the kids to get some shave ice, and we still had time to go to the beach, have dinner, help them with homework, spend one-on-one time with them (I'm militant about this), read a chapter of Little House on the Prairie, and even squeeze in a short family home evening. This schedule is golden!

This last week has been fun. We've gone to the beach, hung out with cousins and friends, shared meals, made new friends, we even got to go on a date, a triple date with our friends.

More than anything though this last week has felt right. All along I knew that the move was right but there was still this feeling of not wanting to let go, of feeling scared, of doubting. But now the feeling is just peace. We are where we should be. School, preschool, babysitting, has all worked out. Christian is in his element, Enzo is thrilled, Maria walks by herself to the neighbor's house to play with kittens, Eliza likes interchanging between her swimsuit and birthdaysuit, and I'm feeling happy, safe, and excited for the future.
I kept reminding myself that I wanted to take pictures of our whole house, just so I could have it documented, to remember this house the way it was when it was home. It never happened. Too late now, we're knee deep in boxes. So here are some pictures I took a couple of weeks ago when life was happening at normal speed, fast just not quite as fast as it's happening now.

We're experiencing a lot of emotions lately. For those of you who don't know we'll be moving to Hawaii in the end of the month. Christian applied for a job teaching Anthropology at a community college in Oahu a month after we moved from Santa Cruz to South San Francisco for my job. In January, when we were at Disneyland he got a call back asking for an interview. From January until June we were in this limbo, waiting, interviewing, more waiting and more interviewing, and then a whole lot of waiting. It was pretty excruciating. This is coming from the girl who was happy to receive rejection letters from colleges because that meant that I at least knew. The not knowing is so hard for me.

And there was the whole issue with my job. I like my job a lot and I don't know if this is any news to you but Anthropology professors aren't necessarily rich. Hawaii is expensive and it would be much more doable to move if I could keep my job somehow. Suffice to say everything worked out. It's kind of crazy because we would stay up and talk about all the different scenarios, draw up imaginary budgets, talk about if this or that happened, and in the end it's all working out.

Christian and I share similar philosophies which is to enjoy the process, enjoy where we are at with what we have, and not put off being happy for the future. You know how some people won't put up pictures on their walls because it's just a rental? Well I'm the kind of person that's constantly decorating and trying to make the place we live in as "us" as possible. This, here, now, is our home, where my kids are making childhood memories, where Christian and I are growing old(er) together. We try to live in the present. But living in the present, other than just overcoming the daily grind, is hard when you have this looming possibility of a big move over your head.

It's nice to now know what we'll be doing. Christian will be teaching. I'll be working remote. We'll live with Christian's mom until we can find a house. Enzo will start third grade in Hawaii. The girls will have our wonderful friend Tailee as their nanny.

We'll have to start packing soon. Maybe because I like seeing my house complete (again, pictures on the wall) or because it's just a crappy process no matter how you look at it, packing is in my top ten list of least favorite things to do.

After the 4th of July weekend we'll pack, but for now I'm living in the present enjoying:

The weather. Picnics.
+ Maria who is almost done with her reading lesson book

+ Enzo who is on vacation and loves being home and has become really helpful cleaning and watching Eliza when I need help

+ Having Christian's cousin Noelle living with us

+ Harry Potter. I am late to jump on this bandwagon but have recently started listening to the Harry Potter books and not only am I enjoying the stories I'm also enjoying the animated narration.

+ Loot from our garden

+ The World Cup! Go Brazil! I work in a fun office where watching the games is totally o.k. We have a big screen set up in the kitchen and we've had lunches from around the world to celebrate the different teams. When I can't watch I listen to the games. Wishing desperately I could be in Brazil but feeling ok about being here, now.
I went to school in MA and Christian did his MA in CT, that's where we met. After getting married we continued to live in the East Coast for two more years, had our first born Enzo, and then moved to HI and after a year came to CA. This year we'll be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary and Enzo was turning 8 and wanted to visit the place where he was born, and the stars aligned with work and school schedules so that we could take a trip back east, play in the snow, see the Palmer branch that lives in NY, and travel around.

First stop Vermont. Snapdragon Inn.

Back in January I went to Alt Summit, a blogging conference in Salt Lake City. There I met some old classmates of Christian who went to school with in him Hawaii. I liked Michelle and Chris instantaneously. They told me about their inn that they renovated in Vermont and invited me to come and spend a weekend with them.

Do you want to know how wonderful, truly wonderful this place is? Imagine a long red eye flight with layover and three kids, one of which is a baby and will not sleep anywhere except her own crib. Staying at the Snapdragon Inn was worth all of that!

This beautiful inn is the sort of place you go to and while you are there you already start concocting a plan to come back, to bring more people with you, to figure out a way if you can move in because this is exactly the type of place you see yourself living the relaxing life you crave. The attention to detail, the warm chocolate chip cookies at night, the elegant rooms, and the subway tiled bathroom with radiant heat floors, makes it the ideal destination for a relaxing getaway.

We had a lovely time. The kids had a lovely time. And the best part was that we were able to share this experience with Christian's brother, Enoch and his wife Amy and their four kids, because everything becomes even better when there are cousins around. We also had my college friend and her family come up and spend the weekend with us. Yes, it was lovely.

Seems silly to post pictures of snow in May but for us CA residents, snow is a treat and the kids had so much fun playing in the snow.

Another highlight of the trip was visiting Raymond Sugarhouse. Watching husband and wife talk excitedly about their sugarhouse and the process of making maple syrup, and watching their daughter and the grandparents all work together was inspiring. Also, tasting warm fresh maple syrup has gone down on my list of best food experiences.

Lucky us they have an online shop. Maple cream. Maple butter. Maple candy. Thank you maple trees!

I wonder how Vermont is in Spring.
I'm guessing it's lovely.
I can't wait to go back.

I've been thinking about biz cards because I have a couple of different events coming up (Fancy Food Show, Alt Conference, Techmunch. If you're going to any of these lets connect ok?!) and I need new cards.

I saw these business cards online and read the backstory and was reminded, once again, that awesome things take an incredible amount of work, even something simple like designing business cards. Even something simple like eating a good salad every day.

Which leads me to the next thing that's on my mind, eating healthier. Where do I even start? Do I go vegan? Do I go paleo? Do I just take the time to make salads every day? Should I cut out all refined sugar? Does this mean I need to put my deep fryer away? Get this, these biz cards belong to a nutritionist who also happens to have a fab website with a lot of good information. Take her quiz and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Health wise here's what I'm craving:

// More energy. I'm tired a lot. Aside from an occasional bad night, Eliza sleeps like a champ. She goes down at 7:00pm and wakes up at 7:00am. My one word for 2014 is rested and so far I'm doing a bad job, although with Christian's help we have been going to bed at 11:00 instead of midnight. Still, I feel pretty exhausted all day. It probably doesn't help that I have an office job where I'm sitting down all day. Would a stand up desk help?

// Exercise. I am seriously thinking of hiring a health coach to help me out. I have started up ballet again and that feels wonderful, but it's only once a week and it means that one day out of the week I only see Eliza in the morning and I get less time with Enzo and Maria which I hate, hate, hate. I used to be into this app but I've fallen off the wagon and only do a couple of exercises a week instead of every day.

// Bike. I'm pretty convinced that a bike would be great. I could bike to work easily and I think I would really enjoy it. But I'm pretty intimidated by the whole idea of buying a bike. Maybe it's because I live in the Bay Area where so many people bike and have fancy bikes, I just don't even know where to start on buying a bike. I don't need a fancy bike, just something reliable. Craigslist is proving to be overwhelming.

// Cooking. Christian is so freakin' fabulous and also a great cook. But a lot of nights we're eating egg sandwiches or quesadillas because when he's home with the kids he has a billion things to do and his main focus is to keep the house clean. So I come home to happy kids and a clean house, which is so great but then we have to make dinner and by the time I come home everyone is starving. I think I need to start cooking at night after I put the kids down.

// Menu planning. I can't cook unless I plan a menu. I mean, I can but then we're back to quesadillas and egg sandwiches. I used to be great about meal planning but lately it's gone way down on my priority list.

// Better lunches. Enzo takes a lunch to school every day and I bring a lunch to the office almost every day. I really want to make better lunches for the both of us.

// Healthy snacks. I sit. I write. I snack. Repeat. This is my day from 9:00am to 5:00pm. If I'm stuck on an article I'll go to the office kitchen and grab a snack. If I'm updating Foodie's pinterest board I run to the kitchen and grab a snack. It's so nice to have snacks and breakfast at work but also so dangerous. I need to figure out a system where I'm snacking on healthy things and not just empty calories.

// More veggies. Hello, I live in California. I have these great produce store within walking distance from my house with fresh everything, even yucca! There is no excuse why we're not eating loads of veggies every day, except of course that darn time issue I seem to have.

I'm doing a juice cleanse with these guys after I come back from my trip in February and after the juice cleanse I plan on meal planning, cooking, and exercising. Sounds like a monumental task but maybe if I start organizing myself now, with a realistic menu, a weekly shopping list, and a darn bike, it could possibly happen.

Making homemade yogurt is surprisingly simple, inexpensive, and healthy. Yogurt is great to eat plain, with honey, with your favorite fruit, granola, or other toppings or even for making sauces and dips. We are almost never without yogurt at home and once you can make it yourself, it is that much easier to stay stocked.

As everyone's level of lactose intolerance is different sometimes you don't know whether you can eat something that has dairy until you've tried it. One reason why I like making my own yogurt at home, aside from the fact that it's much cheaper, is because some store bought yogurts upset my stomach. It's interesting to see what different people who are lactose intolerant can eat. Most people I know who have lactose intolerance do eat yogurt. Some studies have shown that the probiotics in yogurt help with lactose digestion.
Although you can get very scientific about the whole process, I have found yogurt culture to be fairly forgiving and to grow quite well without too much of a fuss. While a thermometer and yogurt maker are both helpful, you can also pretty easily make yogurt without either. This recipe is designed to demystify yogurt making and I try to give several variations to suit the tools and ingredients you have at home. The basic process is to add yogurt to milk and let it sit in warm place for 8-12 hours.

Bring the milk to a near boil. If you have a thermometer, heat the milk until 180 degrees. If you don't have a thermometer, bring the milk until it starts to foam and form a skin on the top but is not boiling. (The purpose of this is to kill the organisms that you don't want to grow as you incubate it. It you use boxed milk that has been Ultra High Temperature Pasteurized you can even skip these first two steps).

Bring the milk temperature down to between 90 and 120 degrees. You can do this in a cold water bath or by leaving it on the counter for 10 minutes. If you don't have a thermometer then simply wait until the milk is warm to the touch.

Pour the milk into glass jars, large cups or even old yogurt containers.

Add 1/4 cup of yogurt to the warm milk and blend it up. Then divide the warm milk and yogurt mixture into separate containers.

Incubate the yogurt for 8-12 hours between 80 to 100 degrees. There are several ways to do this. You can place the containers in a cooler with very hot water and leave it undisturbed overnight. If you are using a tightly sealed container, like a glass mason jar, you can with hot water all the way to the top. If you are using a plastic yogurt container, or a container that does not have a tight sealed lid, then add hot water until it's halfway up to the top of the container. You don't want the water to leak into your yogurt containers. You can also get a yogurt maker which will maintain it at roughly the correct temperature for the required time.

After the yogurt has settled (8-12 hours) take the yogurt out of the cooler or yogurt maker and place it in the fridge until you are ready to eat it.

There will be a clear liquid whey that separates out from the yogurt which is normal. If you want to make an even thicker yogurt, you can hang it in a cheese cloth in the fridge for a couple hours (place a bowl under it to catch the whey) and let the whey drip out, creating something between a greek yogurt and a very soft cheese texture.

Yesterday I was so productive at work. I was dominating my TeuxDeux list. I went on a walk. I never ever ever go on a walk even though I work in front of the harbor and there's a beautiful trail.

Today my body is shutting down and exhausted. My one word for the year "rested" is proving to be harder than I had imagined. I'm still going to bed every night past midnight and I wake up early because the kids wake up early. I need an action plan to get myself in bed at a reasonable hour.

There are lots of things on my mind today, things I want to organize and put in order. Finances is one of them. Last year I started listening to the Dave Ramsey show and I got fired up. I went from trying not to spend too much to writing down every single thing we spent money on, from our new car to gum at the corner store. I have a spreadsheet on google doc where we keep our budget. It's one of the best things we did in 2013 and something I want to continue improving on for 2014. Also, another huge help was hiring a financial advisor. We have ours through LearnVest and she really helps us stay on track for bigger goals like retirement, paying off student loans, and saving for a house.

I read this post today from one of my favorite bloggers and designers and I really like Erin's view on work and money, it made me think even more about our finances.

With that said I wanted to share some things I've enjoyed reading today that's helped get me energized and through my work day.
noticing my stomach aches coming back and I would usually be really

stomachaches. Then I was moved to a different location, where there were cows
right there on the farm, and the family that hosted me served milk for
breakfast. About an hour after breakfast I was so sick. It was one of the worst
episodes I ever had and my stomach hurt so much I thought I was going to have
to go to the hospital. That's when I finally made the connection, that drinking

Beautiful people eating beautiful food. That's what Roland Bello, Cuban born, Miami raised, NYC resident, photographer extraordinaire, captures.

Sometimes I wonder if I would enjoy a career as a photographer. I'm not particularly good with the camera, but I like the idea of taking picture of people, you know people outside of my comfort zone/family. I tried it once when I was living in Brazil and I was so nervous and uncomfortable I gave up pretty fast. Christian got me the Human's of New York book because I am so obsessed with HONY's Facebook feed and always want to show him the pictures and my favorite comments.

What kind of photography do you enjoy?
I just read this post by Mindy Kaling where she says

"My New Year’s resolution is to do a seven-day juice cleanse starting December 31st! I’ve done a 21-day cleanse and it was the best three weeks of my life. I was so clear-headed and funny and skinny and I felt superior to everyone else, too. May you begin your year with your own little superiority complex!"

Well Mindy, don't mind if I do.

I feel redonkulous doing a style post because on a scale of one to ten I'm at a three. I'm not wearing crocs with socks but given the option of getting dressed or staying in my pajamas I choose pajamas. Actually I chose pajamas, for like a year. I have only worn a uniform two times in my life. First was when I was a cheerleader in high school and then again when I worked from home. Both were pink, but only one was comfortable.

People say that when you work from home you have to pretend like you work in an office and therefore get dressed up and stuff like that. That's crazy talk. The benefit of working from home is that you work from home! No one is going to see you except your husband, who's already committed to you so whateves, and your children one of which wears costumes all day anyway so for her seeing me in my pink fluffy robe, day in and day out was completely normal.

And then two months ago I started working in the office every day. Gone were the days of lounging in my pink robe and in were the days of feeling inadequate because I sit next to not one but two fashion editors. I take about three minutes to get dressed every morning. Luckily I have curly hair so it's not like I can brush it anyway. But still, three minutes is a little pathetic.

So in an effort to look more profesh I have decided to add one new item of clothing to my wardrobe every month and take more than three minutes to get an outfit together. This month was the H&M pants.

Here's to five minutes of getting dressed!

While I look at food all day my co-workers look at style blogs all day. Today they were checking out this blog. Is this outfit a ten or what?! The day I can pull off wearing overalls and turbans I'll be super rockin'.
New Year's resolutions? I have a few, sort of, not really.

I went to Trader Joe's yesterday, crazy I know, and the cashier was super friendly. He was pumped for the new year. We talked about resolutions. His resolution was to wake up every morning at 3:30am, he wants to be more productive and he's been listening to a lot of motivational speakers, he's learned that successful people wake up early.

I want to be successful. I want to be productive. There is no way I'm getting up at 3:30 am. And on second thought I don't want to be more productive, not 3:30am productive. I'm productive enough. I have to be. Our life is too productive as it is. I think I want less productive actually, but I'm keeping my finger's crossed for the cashier guy.

I asked my Facebook friends what their one word for 2014 is. It ranged from "baby" to "study" to "intense." My word for 2014 is going to be "rested," I guess that's my resolution. 2013 was the year of exhaustion. To many changes, to much sleep deprivation, to many nights staying up just because. Here is to a more restful year.

Happy New Year!

What's your word for 2014?

On Wednesday I left work early and came home to Christian and the kids and pies in the oven and pies in the making. This was the first year that Christian and I hosted Thanksgiving, minus the year we were in Brazil and had an alternative Thanksgiving. Ever since we moved to California we've been going to his aunt's house and it's always so magnificently fabulous that we've never felt the urge to host our own. But this year his aunt and uncle went to Italy and we have our new house that's big enough for such extravaganzas.

It was a lot of work but it was the good kind of work where you check things off to-do lists and your house smells so good and looks so good too because you're in a frenzy to clean it up for your guests. The kids were awesome. I made them to-do lists and they totally helped. When you say things like, "if you clean your room you get to eat as much pie as you want" they get right to work.

My whole mission was to make sure I made a moist turkey. So I brined the turkey and I soaked cheese cloth in melted butter and white wine and wrapped the turkey up. Then every half hour I would pour more of the butter and white wine mixture over the cheese cloth wrapped turkey, and it worked!
I was telling Cedar, Christian's cousin (the one holding Eliza in the picture above), that my first post ever on this blog was his sweet potato and orange puree recipe that he made the first Thanksgiving we spent in CA. That means that I'm coming up on six years of blogging.

I am thankful for blogging and am sad I don't have the time to do it as often as I would like, but because of blogging I have a job I really enjoy.

Six years later and I get to spearhead a project on the Foodie.com site and work with so many wonderful food bloggers. So many things have changed in the last two months and yesterday after having people we love and care for in our new home and sharing a meal with them, helped solidify that these changes are o.k.

Taking on a new job where I have to be in the office everyday, instead of working from home, has been a challenge. I miss my kids. Moving out of Santa Cruz, a place we love so much, to South San Francisco has been hard. We miss our friends and our community, especially our church community. Enzo has had to change schools and that has been hard for him too. He loves his new teacher but is having a hard time making new friends.

Holidays are good because they make you reflect on the past. This is our 10th Thanksgiving together, Christian and I, and we've spent most of them here in california but also in NYC, MA, and HI, all in different situations as we were moving around. The one constant was each other, and I guess the turkey too. Every year, even when we do have Thanksgiving at his aunt's house, there are always new people to share a meal with. I think that's why I love thanksgiving so much, the aspect of sharing something delicious that everyone can enjoy right there and then is amazing. It's not like Christmas where you're jealous that someone got a better gift than you, or you're annoyed that your kids are complaining about not getting enough toys. Christmas is great but there's always that element of let-down and disappointment.

So far I have never been disappointed with Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving dinner is like one big collective gift, and unlike Christmas where buying is king, with Thanksgiving homemade is better. Every year I like this holiday more and more.
Quiches are delicious but are definitely not
light. This recipe substitutes milk for the heavy cream that is used in most
recipes to make a quiche that is still delicious, with a great texture, but
just a little healthier. You can use whole, 2% or skim milk for this recipe (or
even lactose-free dairy milk!). The whole milk will make it a little creamier
but the other types will work too. If you are lactose intolerant, no worries,
when you mix milk with other food it helps to slow digestion and allows the
body more time to digest the lactose. Using LI-friendly dairy foods, such as
milk or yogurt, in baking can be a quality source of protein and calcium in without
upsetting your stomach.

veggies you have lying around and you can experiment with different flavor
combinations. I used a chicken apple sausage, rainbow chard, and a small onion
for this recipe but have also made quiches with bacon, spinach, mushrooms, and
green onions.

Our church put on a luau two Saturdays ago. People showed up. People had a good time. No one got hurt. Success. No one really knows how many people showed up, mostly because it was impossible to count the kids since they were running around everywhere. I was in charge of planning the food. They told me to plan for one thousand. So I did. Some people say that we had between 800-1000 while others are saying more like 1000-1200. I don't know. At some point it stops mattering. As long as you have enough food it's all good.

Here's the thing, it was really hard. If I had to do it again I probably would not. It was a lot of work and I frankly did not grasp the scope of organizing something so big. Not only do you need people to cook it all you need people to serve food, to get food on the tables, to fill up water pitchers. You need to come up with a budget, call around for the cheapest price, order food, be there when the food is delivered and a bunch of other things. And I was in charge. It's too much for one person to try and do solo. Don't do it. I wish I had organized myself earlier to get a committee together, but I didn't even know where to start until it was crunch time and then I cried out for help.

People came through in a big way. My friend Ruth frosted 30 big cakes on the day of the event. It was her birthday. She couldn't even have a single slice because she's celiac. But Ruth is a problem solver so she got it done. I had a handful of people who helped me get organized that were problem solvers. Some people tried to help that were not problem solvers and I "fired" them quickly. You can't have people complaining, whining, and being critical, not when you are on a time crunch (plus, I did enough complaining for everyone) and you still need to make 150lbs of macaroni salad. No thank you. I love you but no thank you.

I'm not a great problem solver. I've had to learn a thing or two because our life depends on problem solving with me working full time, Christian in school, and those three kids we need to raise. I have to say though that my strength is not in actually solving the problem but surrounding myself with problem solvers and knowing what to ask for.

Service is a tricky thing. You want to serve and be generous but you also need to guard your time. My good friend, a full time professor, mom of 3, and also Mormon, told me that her service is to her family. Since she works she guards her free time so that she can spend time with her family. This luau took me away from my family, a lot. Even on Sundays, the one day where we just relax together, I was on the phone for hours trying to coordinate things. Have you ever resented service? It's such an unsavory feeling right?

If I were to commit to doing something like this again I would ask for more help from the beginning. And maybe, if I were in the situation that I am now with our hectic life I would say "no." I know it sounds terrible, I know it does, but it's the truth. People ask me all the time "how do you do it all?" I know you read my blog and you see pictures of my kids on Instagram. What you see is a split second. You see a moment that was captured. You don't see that after I put the picture of the delicious dinner I served my family Eliza pooped in the tub and instead of eating dessert as I had planned I cleaned a poopy tub. No, I don't do it all just like you don't do it all. When I approach social media and read blogs I enter it with a filter. I know that people's lives aren't perfect. If they're sharing a perfect moment that's great. I love it. I love reading about your awesome husband who brings you breakfast in bed. I love seeing your kids all cute and tidy ready for school. I love seeing your fabulously designed house. But even awesome husbands can be irritating, and tidy kids rip their jeans, and fabulous decor gets dirty or broken. I know that and I hope you know that too. It's called life. It doesn't mean that life isn't good, it just means that life is normal. And because I have a very busy normal life sometimes I have to say no.

I am a happy person. I am in love with my husband and we have a great relationship, My children are healthy. We always have what we need. It's a good life and it's also hard because doing simple things, like going to the post office with three kids is akin to swimming in a pool of acid.

And although I probably wouldn't do the luau again it was really neat to see people coming together to help out. I am so thankful for the helpers, for the woman who came and put foil over everything because the flies were starting to appear. I love that woman! I don't know what her name is but I love her.
Everyone has their thing that they crave regularly. For me it's donuts. I don't even eat donuts that often, maybe once every two months, and I'm so particular about my donuts I'm often disappointed when I do get to eat donuts. And still, I often catch myself wishing desperately for warm glazed donuts. I think that's why I'm so smitten with these donut balloons.

Baby Maria who is no longer a baby turned four! Her nickname at home is still nenem (baby), and sis or sissy because we just love having her as our daughter and sister. And even though she carries out her roles very well she is also very much her own person, independent of the rest of us. I look at pictures of her from when she was one, two, three, and some of the expressions are the same. That determined, knows what she wants, very present expression has been a part of Maria ever since the day she started crawling around and growing into herself.

Maria loves people. She likes meeting new people and connecting with people she already knows. She will get on Skype and talk to my mom and grandma for as long as I let her. She loves her friends and wants to do nice things for them all the time. She adores her brother Enzo, she has really found a best friend in him. Aside from when he's in school they are basically together all the time. They share everything, including a bed. She is protective of Eliza and likes to feed and dress her. She loves animals so much sometimes I feel guilty we don't have a pet just because I know how connected she feels to animals. She notices everything especially people's feelings. She has ideas, lots of her own ideas. She'll listen to your ideas but rarely will want to go with your ideas.

She is learning how to read and can already sound out some words, only she'll never tell you she's the one learning since she decided that her stuffed animals were the ones who were going to learn. So when I sit down and do reading lessons with her I have to direct her stuffed unicorn or stuffed frog the whole time and pretend like she's not even there. She'll respond in a silly voice as if she's speaking for the animals. She's just like that, super creative and a performer. She makes up jokes, lots of jokes, and because they're so wild we always end up cracking up.

After a week of the stomach flu and then a birthday adventure to a pony farm that flopped because of the rain, we finally got to celebrate her birthday this past Saturday. It was a small party and it was really fun. We ate Brazilian hot dogs (hot dogs with mashed potato, vinaigrette, corn, shoe string potatoes, and other fun toppings) and had ice cream and brownies for dessert.

Enzo, who has developed a whole repertoire of acrobatics on the hammock did tricks during the whole party while the little girls danced around in costumes. It was the perfect way to celebrate Maria and I'm glad we got to do it.
Nothing like a powerful stomach flu to make you feel really vulnerable. I never liked being sick, although it was a lot easier before I had a husband and kids. You go through your day doing a million little things but when you're sick nothing gets done. Normally when the kids ask for a cup of water you walk a couple yards to the kitchen and without even thinking you end up picking up a couple toys that's on the floor, wipe off the table, change the baby's diaper, and then return with the cup of water. So much of what I do is in auto-pilot mode. When you're sick even the simple task of getting your kid a cup of water becomes really hard because the moment you stand up you have to run to the bathroom.

Yesterday the kids were basically on their own. If it weren't for the iPad and goldfish crackers I'm not sure they would have survived. But they did. And Christian and I are starting to feel better and pleading with the universe that our kids will not get whatever it is we have.

Yesterday was also Maria's birthday. She didn't get a single balloon or a nice cake. She did however get a new princess dress, a princess doll, and a princess plastic tea party set, all things she wanted and I wasn't going to get her. But then on Saturday when I ran to Costco to get 15lbs of butter for our luau and was feeling really stressed I decided last minute (this is why I hate shopping, when I'm stressed I make bad shopping decisions) to get her what she wanted. Rarely does a bad decision end up being a good decision but in this case it was awesome! She was so happy with her new doll and new dress she played tea party all day long, in between watching Eliza of course. So even if she never plays with her new toys again it was worth it.

We're celebrating her birthday on saturday, that is if no one else gets sick.Damaris @Kitchen Cornershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12526087060203536108noreply@blogger.com0
