Healthy Snacks for Toddlers- Rice

posted on: Friday, October 24, 2008

Enzo loves rice especially with beans. But eating rice and beans requires sitting at the table and me supervising the ordeal to make sure that the rice goes inside the mouth and not all over my already disgusting carpet. Cleaning rice off the floor is a form or torture, in case you didn't know. So when Enzo needs to have a snack or eat solo I like to use the rice molds that Bekah sent me from Japan. Yesterday as part of our snack duty I made star, teddy bear, and heart shaped rice for the kiddos.
Despite my husband's warning that I was complicating my life I still made the 20 shaped rice. It was easy since the rice was made in the rice cooker and with my mold I can do 3 a a time. The really hard part about this snack ordeal was making Cheddar cheese from scratch. Jut kidding.

I found this on-line store that sells rice molds for $4.00. I might have to order some other shapes.

For a list on online stores where you can find Bento accessories you can go to Lunch in Box. It's also a great website to get ideas on Bento related things.

  1. These are the cutest rice balls! I love all the bento shapers. Do you read Just Bento? It is a fun blog and she sometimes showcases children friendly bento ideas (although some are extremely detailed and labor intensive!)

  3. Wow, I better not let the boys see your pretty shapes or they'll complain about their ball-shaped rice balls.

  4. Your new blog is incredible. Let's all definitely plan on dinner while you're here- we're not going anywhere for the holidays!

  5. I like to sprinkle black sesame seeds on the rice balls, but of course the kids don't go for it. They do like ginger pork in the middle or sometimes they'll go for a sprinkling of furikake.

  7. Is it just rice or do you add something to it? I saw you used your rice cooker, I have always wanted one. I can never get my rice to cook perfectly. Thanks for the idea. Jen

  8. Hi Jenni,
I just used rice. An easy way to make rice is to
    1-rinse 2 cups rice
2- put a bit of oil in a pan and add the rice with 4 cups water.
3-when it comes to a boil turn it down to low and cover for 15 minutes. Don't mix the rice, just leave it closed for 15 minutes on low.

it should be ready after 15 minutes.
