I think I ate at the first McDonalds ever built in Sao Paulo

posted on: Wednesday, December 1, 2010

Don't google it or anything, but I'm pretty sure this was the first McDonalds in Sao Paulo which I think opened in the mid 1980s. I remember the excitement of eating at a real American restaurant, we wanted to go so bad. So my parents took us to McDonalds for the first time to celebrate my sister's Birthday.

By the way I'm the one with the short dark hair.
I look like a boy.
I would rather die a million deaths than have that haircut ever again.

Camila was way too smart to allow my mom to cut her hair in ridiculous ways. She taught me how to dip my McDonalds french fried in ketchup. Then when we moved to the US she taught me how to dip Chips Ahoy into a glass of milk. Chips Ahoy remains her favorite cookie of all times. Whenever I go to Brazil I bring her a pack and then I make her eat fresh baked cookies because homemade cookies are superior, but Camila will argue to her grave that Chips Ahoy far exceed superior.

Camila has good taste, don't get me wrong. She knows the best restaurants to eat in Sao Paulo. If you're ever in the area give her a call she'll take you to the best sushi of your life and definitely the best Italian as well.

I wish I was in Sao Paulo today. One, because it's summer there. Two, because it's my sister's big 30(!!!)th birthday and I know we would celebrate,
probably not at McDonalds. I'm guessing we'd go for sushi. Yeah, sushi for sure.

Te amo Ca.

  6. Ah look how cute you were with your missing teeth and curly fringe. Boy haircuts. What were our mums thinking?? Your ma looks like she`s about to stick the french fry up her nose. We used to love going to Maccas when we were kids. Until my mum banned it for environmental and globalisation reasons. Man, we were pissed!

  9. Damaris,
It's nice to travel memory lane sometimes. I am taking a hike with yours right now. I used to go to São Paulo with my brother a couple of times a month shopping in downtown area. Pedro would take me to the McDonalds located at Rua São Bento, it was such a treat for me coming from the 'interior' there was no American style fast food in São José dos Campos at that time.
I also associate Big Mac to the song 'como eu quero' from Kid Abelha. For whatever reason every time I ate there they were playing it. I still enjoy the song can’t say the same about McDonalds.

  14. Yes! 25 the Março, Ladeira Porto Geral, São Bento and vicinity. We went there shopping for fabric and all sewing related things. Another place we need to stop at were the Lebanese restaurants in the hood. Amazing esfihas, kibes, kaftas no espeto, rice dishes yumm. The filo pastries stuffed with nuts, rose water and honey were also treats we couldn't skip...good times.

  16. Sushi sounds good to me! If I ever to get to Brazil, I may have to look up your sis. My mom is one of 13 kids and she is the only one who moved to the US from Brazil, so we do have many relatives there, but I have never met any of them in person:) Great story!

  19. Rebecca you should totally dig up the picture and send it to me. i would love it. I love old pictures of people. They make me feel better about stupid things like bad clothes or bas hair cuts.

i think all little girls at one point had that same unfortunate boy cut. mine looked like my mom literally put a bowl on top of my head.
