In this world there is always room for broiled grapefruit and hardships

Every morning I have tea and toast for breakfast. Lately my morning repertoire has gotten a little more classy as I've introduced broiled grapefruit to the mix.

I saw it first on my friend Kristen's blog and then I wrote about it in the news paper and now I'll give you the easiest recipe of your life

Broiled Grapefruit
(printable version)

Pink or red grapefruit, halved
1 tablespoon light brown sugar

1. With a pairing knife loosen grapefruit from segments from membranes and pith.
2. Heat broiler with rack 4 inches from heat.
3. Sprinkle grapefruit with sugar and place on a baking sheet. Broil for 5 minutes or until tops are browned.
Serve warm.

Sometimes I wish everything in life was as easy as brown sugar on top of grapefruit, broiled just so.  And sometimes I don't. Sometimes I'm thankful for things that are hard, it make me grow, it makes us grow, it makes a lot of us grow actually.

Did I tell you that we raised over $8,000 in the online bake sale for Japan.
With all the craziness of the day we were still able to raise more money than we ever expected.

Did I tell you that Christian got two more rejections for grants this week? I want to personally write a letter to these academic grant agencies. I want to tell them that Christian is a good guy. The best I know. I want to tell them that he's worked extremely hard on these grants, that he stays up until midnight working, and then he gets up in the middle of the night to give our baby a bottle, and that during the day he'll walk away from his computer to help Enzo find the tiniest little black lego piece that was ever invented, so that Enzo can finish his castle. Christian deserves all the grants in the world.

But the [academic] world doesn't work like that.

Today I went to check out Kristen's blog to see what new recipe she had up and I saw this post about her daughter Lillie. Lillie and Enzo used to play together in the park when we lived in Hawaii. Kristen and I would sit in the bench and talk about life and food. Sometimes Enzo would miss his playmate. Sometimes she was in the hospital doing chemotherapy. Lillie was born with Optic Glimoas, tumors woven in with the nerves of her eyes. She has full vision in her left eye and is blind in her right. She is learning braille just in case.

For Enzo's birthday he got money for swim lessons and even a little extra. Today he donated the extra to Lillie's Relay for Life team, Laie's Angels.

If you have a little extra birthday money in your pocket, you can donate to Lillie's team. Here is how. If you have a little extra time on you hands spread the word about Lillie's team. Social media is a beautiful gift, we can use it to make a change.

Tomorrow we're driving to Berkley to celebrate another one of Enzo's friends, Avi who just turned 5.
Than at night I'm going to sit down with Christian and we're going to read over another grant proposal.
Hope springs eternal.
Always.
